Steam the pumpkin and purple sweet potato until cooked and set aside.

Add a small amount of water to the flour, pumpkin, purple sweet potato, and baking powder, knead the dough, let it rise, and wait until the dough has doubled in size. Knead the dough repeatedly and release the air from the dough.

Because there is no sugar in the dough, red sugar and chopped red dates are placed in the middle of the innermost dough. The outer two layers of dough are rolled into dough skins, wrapped layer by layer around the dough with filling, pinched tightly at the seal, and then the dough is cut with a knife to form a cross on the surface.

Steam the buns with cold water on high heat. I used an electric steamer, which automatically sets the steaming time to 22 minutes. After steaming, let the buns sit for 3-4 minutes before opening the lid.
